Supported Residential Facility (SRF)
Licensed accommodation with meals and personal care on site, and staff available around the clock.
What a Supported Residential Facility is
A Supported Residential Facility, or SRF, is a South Australian category of accommodation licensed under the Supported Residential Facilities Act 1992. Licences are issued and monitored by the local council for the area the facility sits in, and they set standards for the building, the staffing and the personal care residents receive.
An SRF is different from the other ways you can live with us. In Supported Independent Living your NDIS plan funds the support workers and you rent the home; in an SRF the accommodation, the meals and a level of personal care come together as part of living there, paid for from your own income, with your NDIS funding sitting alongside it for the disability supports in your plan.
For some people that combination is simpler. There is one place to live, meals are provided, someone is on site at any hour, and the arrangement does not depend on assembling a household or a roster from scratch.
Who an SRF suits
It tends to work well for people who:
- Want their own room in a staffed home rather than a shared house they help run.
- Need personal care and medication support available at any hour, without a full high-intensity roster.
- Would rather have meals, laundry and cleaning included than manage a household.
- Are moving on from hospital, a boarding house or an unstable tenancy and want somewhere settled.
- Have a psychosocial disability and do better with routine, company and staff nearby.
- Do not have, or do not want, SIL or SDA funding in their plan.
What living here includes
- A private or shared room, furnished, in a licensed facility.
- All meals and drinks, including catering for dietary and cultural needs.
- Laundry, linen and cleaning of shared areas.
- Staff on site around the clock.
- Help with personal care — showering, dressing, grooming — to the level you need.
- Medication management by trained staff.
- Support to get to appointments and to stay connected with health services.
- A social and activities programme, and support to keep up your own interests.
How it works alongside your NDIS plan
Board and lodging in an SRF is paid from your own income — usually your Disability Support Pension — in the same way rent and food would be anywhere else. It is not drawn from your NDIS plan.
Your NDIS funding continues to pay for the disability supports in your plan: community participation, capacity building, allied health, support coordination, transport and any high-intensity supports you are funded for. We deliver those ourselves where you want us to, or work alongside whichever providers you already use.
Before you commit to anything we will set out plainly what the facility fee covers, what your plan covers, and what falls to neither — so there are no surprises in the first month.
Common questions
Is an SRF the same as SDA or SIL?
No. SDA is NDIS-funded housing built or modified for very high support needs, and SIL is NDIS-funded support delivered in a home you rent. An SRF is licensed under South Australian law, and the accommodation, meals and on-site personal care are paid for from your own income rather than your plan. Your NDIS funding still pays for the disability supports in your plan while you live there.
Do I need NDIS funding to live in an SRF?
No. SRFs are open to people with and without an NDIS plan. If you are an NDIS participant, your plan continues to fund your supports alongside your accommodation.
Can I keep my own supports and providers?
Yes. Living in one of our facilities does not oblige you to use ResicareSA for the supports in your NDIS plan. Many residents keep the workers and allied health professionals they already know.
